2007 - 2008 Season

The West Valley Jazz Orchestra continues its tradition of presenting world-class jazz artists in concert, at affordable prices and in great acoustic venues.  Our just-concluded sixth season featured a diverse selection of world-renowned contemporary musicians: trumpeter Eric Miyashiro; vocalist Jamie Davis; flutist Ali Ryerson, and guitarist Grant Geissman

Over the past five years, it has been our privilege to have shared the stage with many  inspiring musicians, including Dave Eshelman, Dee Daniels, Horace Alexander Young, Hafez Modirzadeh, Andy Martin, Carl Saunders, Wayne Bergeron, Dave Weckl, Jerry Bergonzi, Russell Ferrante, Greg Adams, Wayne Wallace, Aaron Lington, David Liebman, and Steve Smith.  For the WVJO 2006/2007 season archive, visit here.

Trumpeter Eric Miyashiro

Eric Miyashiro is a top studio musician in Japan, and becoming widely recognized as a powerful high note player in the tradition of Maynard Ferguson.  He made his debut as a professional musician at the age of 14 when he joined the Sammy Davis Jr. band as a lead trumpet player. He went on to study at the prestigious Berklee College of music. Eric has played lead trumpet with famous bands and artists such as Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson, Count Basie, Thad Jones & Mel Lewis, Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Natalie Cole, Tony Bennett, and Sarah Vaughn.

In 2000, Jamie Davis became the voice of the The Count Basie Orchestra, but he has a long career performing with renowned musicians including Milt Jackson, Eddie Henderson, Dave Lieberman, Melba Moore, Allen Smith, Vernon Alley and Pharaoh Saunders. He now tours and performs with a 19 piece Basie Orchestra band worldwide. His first solo CD, “It's All About Love”, was released in 2002 with rave reviews.

Flutist Ali Ryerson

Ali Ryerson is one of the most exciting and versatile flutists on the scene today. She has performed with such diverse talents as Dr. Billy Taylor, Kenny Barron, Stephane Grappelli, Frank Wess, Red Rodney, Laurindo Almeida, Art Farmer, Maxine Sullivan, Roy Haynes, Julius Baker, and (as principal flutist with the Monterey Bay Symphony) with Luciano Pavarotti.

Guitarist Grant Geissman

Grant Geissman is a  world-class guitarist and Emmy-nominated composer, widely heard as the guitarist in Chuck Mangione's breakthrough 1978 album "Feels So Good," and now a very active LA studio musician in recordings, film, and TV.  Geissman is the guitarist for the critically-acclaimed and Grammy-nominated Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band, one the world's best. He's a native of San Jose and began his musical education and career here.

Grant has recorded with diverse artists including Quincy Jones, David Benoit, Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello, Paula Abdul, Ringo Starr, John Tesh, Keiko Matsui, Van Dyke Parks, Brian Wilson, Placido Domingo, Luis Miguel, and Julio Iglesias. He has also played for popular TV shows Two and a Half Men, Monk (playing the Django Reinhardt-style acoustic guitar solo on the theme), Dawson's Creek, Touched by an Angel, Boy Meets World, and Family Affair, as well as countless movies including Austin Powers/The Spy Who Shagged Me, The Cable Guy, Tomb Raider II,  Star Trek: Resurrection, and The Majestic.

A contemporary jazz recording artist in his own right, Grant has recorded thirteen solo albums, the latest being Say That! on Futurism Records (released in 2006).  His web site is www.grantgeissman.com .
